Shaving - Should I or Shouldn’t I?

Shaving - Should I or Shouldn’t I?

Before we even begin to answer this question, we need to dispel the myth that shaving causes hair to grow back thicker and faster. Shaving has no impact on the structure of the hair. It may feel thicker due to the blunt edge but it is, in fact, not.

We get asked all the time: Is it OK to shave between appointments? Yes. It’s perfectly fine. In fact, it’s the only method of unwanted hair control we encourage you to use between appointments.

Unlike LASER hair removal (more about LASER and electrolysis in another post), waxing, and tweezing, shaving doesn’t impact the natural growth cycle of the hair. We can’t treat follicles we can’t find, so it’s important to keep the hair in place so we know exactly where to treat. (That hair acts as a flag to show us exactly where that follicle is located.)

That said, we don’t want you to shave immediately before an appointment. We need enough hair growth to grab the hair with a pair of tweezers. For some people that means they can shave that morning and have electrolysis that evening. For others, it means not shaving for days. You know how fast your hair grows, so use your judgment.

That said, we also understand sometimes you want to look your best before a date and your appointment was booked months in advance. As soon as you get your appointment reminder and realize you’re going to shave beforehand, call us to cancel or reschedule so someone waiting for an appointment can take your slot. We don’t begrudge anyone for wanting to look their best for real-life social engagement. Likewise, if you space your appointment and shave the day of knowing you won’t have enough growth, or show up - often we can find enough length on some hairs or work on a different area of concern. But check with your provider - not all of them always work on the same body areas.

Carry on.
