Why Do I Need Electrolysis Before Vaginoplasty?

Nobody wants hair growing inside their vagina, around the vaginal opening, or on the interior of their labial folds. Your future vagina needs attention before it’s even created to avoid uncomfortable, and even painful, playtime later. To avoid more invasive remedies (which often must wait a year after surgery), you need to prepare now. 

Whether you’re having traditional inversion, a peritoneal pull-through, or a colovaginoplasty, your surgeon probably wants you to get some electrolysis for the best possible outcome. A hairfree vagina is possible, but it takes patience and dedication to the process.

For peritoneal pull-throughs or colovainoplasty, you may only need the area of the vaginal opening and inner labia done. Your surgeon will give you a chart of the area they need cleared for success, but if you’re unsure, ask your electrologist. We have generalized charts of recommended clearance areas, as well as many surgeon specific charts on hand.

For traditional inversion surgery, it’s important to start early and make regular appointments to ensure clearance prior to surgery. Obviously, this area can’t be reached by our equipment post surgery so it’s important to get it cleared first and foremost. Hairs that may regrow after surgery at the vaginal opening or within the labial folds can be reached afterward, once healing has been well-established.

You may be wondering why scraping and cauterizing follicles during surgery isn’t enough. While most surgeons do perform some scraping and cauterizing, it leaves dormant follicles in place, which can lead to unwanted hair growth later. It can’t be relied upon on its own for successful elimination. Electrolysis enables permanent hair removal through many growth cycles to help ensure a hair free and happy vagina later.
